Home Loans - First Home Buyers Grants

The Federal Government (through the State Governments) has a grant scheme available to first-home buyers, of $7000 towards the purchase of their first property. This scheme was initially set up to offset the effect of the introduction of GST.

Each state has different rules however and first-home buyers in New South Wales and Victoria can get a further bonus from their state governments. Other states offer various benefits such as stamp duty discounts to first-home buyers.

Find a brief summary of the requirements to qualify for the grant. Applicants must:
  • be a permanent resident or citizen of Australia.
  • not already own, or have owned a property. If you are married, this includes property held in either your name or your partner's.
  • intend to live in the property and move into within one year of purchase.
  • Buyers of new homes have 26 weeks after entering a contract to begin construction and have 18 months to complete construction.
